Braids, BUNS, Top Knots, Fishtails- Oh MY!

I’m so loving this hair trend right now! They are here to stay too.

We first saw the fishtail craze over the summer, and it isn’t going anywhere this Fall/Winter season either. {{Yay!!}} Seriously, a fishtail braid can work for any occasion: work, school, errands or even a hot date. It may look intricate, but I’m here to tell you it is so easy-peasy.

Don’t forget your cute dent-less hair tie!

Harper’s Bazaar recently featured an article on the rise of the “fun bun”. The top knot is a fall hairstyle that you can rock with any fashion style. We’ve seen adorable top knots on celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie, and Gwen Stefani. Each one staying true to their glam, boho, and rocker, fashion styles.

I’m obsessed! Why? Because they are so chic, stylish, a little edgy, and not to mention, so gorgeous! A hair-spiration!

For those of you with shorter hair styles, not to worry because you can easily add a clip-in extension, or two, to improvise. You can achieve a whole new look + still be a part of the fun.

Now remember, the idea is to create a look that is NOT precise. Once you’ve completed either look, use your fingers to pull each section of the braid out, or slightly tug on each side of the top knot to loosen. This will add life, texture, and overall visual appeal, to the look. Unless you’re a professional ballerina, that bun should not be perfect!

For all you mamas, we can’t forget about our little divas! I adjust the style accordingly. For my daughter, I regularly do side braids, heart braids, and cute little buns {<<—she is soo not a fan of buns, so bribery may be necessary ;)}

Outside french braid- starting at the top right side of head, wrapping around to form a pony tail on the opposite side.
Tight, side braid, only using a small section of hair. Add a bow or flower to complete the look.

Fun, right? Whatever your style is one of these will surely work for you. It gives us so many options to our everyday hair routine.

Industry Insider: Meet MUA Chandra + a Fall Bridal Look

Allow me to introduce my dear friend, Chandra Campos. She is one of San Diego’s elite makeup artist’s and specializes in bridal looks. Not only is she amazing (duh!) but her charm and wit add to her whole package. One convo with her and you’re liable to be  laughing your boo-tay off with her one liners. 😉

Ch-ch-check her out…

One of our infamous self-portraits

+Tell us a little bit about yourself?

CC: I was basically born into the beauty industry; everyone in my family is either a business owner of a salon, spa, or has been in the industry for 30+ years. Needless to say, I know makeup and skin like the back of my hand. I started with M.A.C. cosmetics and soon realized I loved doing weddings, personal events, photo shoots, etc. I left MAC and  started Chandra Campos Makeup Artistry. My business is growing and I’m very excited for whats to come in the future. I think my clients are in for a real treat.

+What’s currently in your makeup bag?

CC: DuWop Lip Venom in clear, Orange Tempura lipglass by M.A.C. (limited, sorry because its really an amazing color),  Makeup Forever Duo Matte powder.

+Your #1 beauty tip:

CC: I find that most people don’t do their eyes before their foundation. By doing your eyes first, you’re not working twice by having to fix your foundation from eye shadow fall-out. [<<This is an excellant tip! Remember this loveleigh’s!]

+Foundation you’re obsessed with right now?

CCChanel Perfection Lumière. I’m currently obsessed with the glow-y, healthy-skin look. Chanel does just that, plus, gives a soft finish, with a natural looking feel. It’s as if you have nothing on!

+Favorite Skincare product:

CC: NeriumAD! My skin has never looked and felt better. [Visit her Nerium website and stay tuned for Chandra’s blog too]

+Quick trick(s) to spice up someone’s everyday look:

CC: To add something fast to your everyday look (without spending a lot of time) add a soft brown eye shadow to the bottom lashes–this will make your eyes look more polished. Extra mascara and you have a quick, easy, and finished looking eyes.(A few suggestions: soft brown, saddle, texture, all M.A.C. colors)

Also, add a mineralized highlight right above the cheeks to give that subtle glow and your look will be complete. ( M.A.C. mineralized skinfinish powders are beautiful as highlights)

Here is a perfect Fall Wedding makeup look Chandra created for our friend Ahsue:

Nanoo Gold (M.A.C.limited) & Hush (M.A.C.) & Nylon (M.A.C.) on lid

Saddle (M.A.C.) & Soft Brown (M.A.C.) in crease

Black liner–on top only (Makeup Forever in aqua black)
Saddle lined on bottom lashes
Mascara is Smoky Lash by Makeup Forever
Mixing YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat Illuminating Foundation with Chanel perfection lumier’ to create the perfect combo for her skin color.
Using a Beauty Blender for contour color by Nars in Tahoe.

#34 M.A.C. lashes
Cheeks: Dainty with Peaches by M.A.C. to create that perfect, soft peach with a touch of pink.
Lips: Have to have it lip liner by M.A.C.- YSL Rouge Volupté in 30 (Faubourg Peach) with Hue (M.A.C.) and Patty Cakes by Metal Edge.

+Talk about your vision for Ahsue’s bridal look. What inspired you?

Ahsue is naturally beautiful. Makeup is about adding, creating structure, or definition that isn’t there. Ahsue already has everything we love so I just played up her natural structure; with colors that are already in her palette. (i.e. warmer colors)

Ahsue is very unique and trend setting. I kept that in mind when I created her soft and clean makeup look that would match her style. I only wanted to enhance her already beautiful face.

So stunning, right? I know, that’s why I had to share with all of you.

If you’re getting married and want to consult Chandra, please visit her makeup website.

Motivational Monday

Happy Monday Loveleigh’s!

I am unfortunately a little under the weather. {sniff, sniff..} On the flip side to being sick, I have found more time to blog and reflect on all things beauty.

I know it’s cliché, but always remember true beauty really comes from within. It’s in our confidence, character, intellect, passion, kindness- which all comes from deep within each of our unique souls.

Obvi, I’m obsessed with makeup, skincare, and all beauty related products-but they don’t define me or determine my beauty or yours.

I know it can be hard to not freak-out over an annoying breakout [guilty, party of 1] or bad hair day.  Instead, try to direct your focus on being confident, loving yourself, and being happy. No amount of amazing foundation or the world’s best hairspray can fix that–only you can.

Love this. It should be everyone’s mantra!
My fav! I wish more of our society’s youth could understand this.
Classic

Today, think about your reflection of inner beauty and what it looks like to others from the outside.

MUA Secrets: Long, lush lashes + My fav mascaras

When picking a mascara, you should consider the look you want to achieve THEN choose the formula: lengthening, thickening, separating/non-clumping or waterproof/smudge-proof. I have yet to find a mascara formula that encompasses all of these. So trust, when I say if one claims to do it all, it doesn’t.

Sooo with that said:

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Mascaras-A trick makeup artists use to make lashes pop is to apply one coat of lengthening mascara first (think Lancôme Définicils found here), followed by one coat of thickening mascara (L’Oreal Voluminous).

Never. Ever. Pump the wand{!!}-This pushes air inside your mascara tube which will cause your product to dry out faster.

Mascara will get old- if your mascara smells funky, throw it in the trash immediately, if not sooner. Try to replace every 3- 6 months.

Waterproof, only when you really need it-I personally don’t care for waterproof; as I prefer smudge-proof/stay-proof formulas. Plus, it can be very harsh on those delicate lashes if used daily. [However, there have been times where I have used my favorite mascara of the moment and then applied a layer of waterproof on top to seal it.]

Makeup Forever Aqua Smoky Lash is a great waterproof formula mascara found here.

Add an extra layer to your outer corner lashes-After you’ve coated your lashes with mascara, add just one more layer to the outer corners. The extra coat will make your lashes look especially long and make your eyes appear farther apart.

Apply mascara to top and bottom lashes = equally-Many MUA’s may disagree with me and argue not putting mascara  on the bottom lashes is more for a natural look, but I feel, why stop at the top? That’s so unfinished looking and you can still look natural. Plus, I prefer that doll-like look [Who doesn’t?]

Bend the Wand- That’s right, open up your go-to mascara and pull the wand out slightly, apply a little pressure while pulling down simultaneously to form an angle. Voila! You’ll instantly have a wand that can now get in to those hard to reach areas of your eyes, without making a total mess! Check it out below…

Zig-zag Method-When applying your mascara, use a Zig-zagging method (like wiggle back and forth, sharply but gently) with the wand. This will help lessen clumping.

Use an Eyelash Curler-Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider and brighter. Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler is hands down, the best one ever made. InStyle Best in Beauty award winner as well. [I’ll be honest and say I don’t ever use a curler, but I ALWAYs recommend this one to clients and friends with unruly lashes]

My latest mascara obsession’s:

M.A.C’s new Extended Play

This formula leaves my lashes feeling lightweight, soft, and it does.not.smudge. Like, all day my lashes look the same as they did in the morning.

I love the smaller, skinny wand because it allows me to get to all my hard-to-reach lashes–>you know, those pesky corner ones? It’s more of a precise look of lashes rather than the look of thick and voluminous lashes. The brush reminds me of an old fav– Lancôme Définicils.

With just one coat I can get MAJOR separation between lashes too. As in every-single-lash was coated in rich black color + I felt as if my lashes were extending to the heavens! Well, not really, but we can all dream, right?

To remove, gently rub with warm water, for about 20 seconds, then wipe away.

FAV DRUGSTORE MASCARA’S:

L’Oreal Double Extend

L’oreal Double Extend Mascara is a two-sided mascara that has a white base coat and mascara on the opposite end. The white side actually nourishes your lashes. [I swear mine have grown longer!] It has been my go-to mascara for the last couple years. It’s under $8 so you really can’t go wrong.

Simply apply a healthy dose of the base coat to lashes and follow up with the mascara for super fat, long, and thick lashes! Don’t let the white part dry too much or it makes putting the black on top a bit difficult.

The best part, absolutely no smudging or flaking. It truly wears well all day.

It can only be removed with water. But don’t freak out when you see these creepy, little black things lingering in your sink after removing.

L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara

I really do love this mascara and I have friends that are obsessed with it too. It’s definitely a great lengthening and thickening combo. The carbon black is the blackest black you can find. If you’re looking for thick, soft, glossy lashes, then this formula is for you.

But, it does smudge on me by mid-day. [I do have more oily skin, so keep that in mind.] To prevent that, I will apply a light coat of a waterproof formula to seal it for the day.

Best Eye Makeup Remover

Grapeseed Oil

I have extremely sensitive skin; therefore, my eyes are too. I treat my little ojos with serious TLC. You should too. The skin around your eyes is so fragile and who really wants crepey lids and crows feet?

I also recommend taking all your eye makeup off with grape-seed oil. It can be found at your local Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, or natural health food grocer.

I have been using grape-seed oil to remove even the toughest waterproof/stay-proof makeup for years. It is an excellent conditioner for your lashes and less abrasive way of removing eye makeup.

Don’t be embarrassed you keep cooking oil in your bathroom.

Please, please,  share with me your favorite mascara. I want to hear!

Oh, and one more thing speaking of lashes…

Um, I die over these car lashes! I saw them the other day and I almost crashed my own car while giggling in astonishment. Cutest, most cheesiest, but totally amazing things ever!  I so wish my husband would let me put these on my car.

{Maybe he won’t notice ;)}

LOTD: Look of the Day+ M.A.C. Office Pro

Back in September, M.A.C. launched a new collection called Office Hours Pro. It’s a pro longwear formula.

Here is how MAC describes the formula: “A unique longwearing Eye Shadow with a silky, creamy texture formulated for maximum color impact. Easily blendable and buildable; lids are visibly smooth no matter how intense the application. Lasts 8 hours.”

As long as you use a base, it will stay all day. My favs are: Painterly, Nubile and Soft Ochre paint pots.

As part of the collection, 9 Pro Longwear Eye Shadow shades were released in colors: Always Sunny, Bloom on, Endless Passion, Ever Ivory, Uninterrupted, More Amour, Mauveless, Linger Softly, & Fashion Fix [my fav].

I fell in love with Fashion Fix-a gray-tinged, brownish-taupe, with a sheer matte finish.  This shade is so beautiful. It is very versatile and can be used for many different looks. It is sheer, but does apply nicely and the color is buildable.

Fashion Fix
Deeply Dashing-pressed pigment. It adds a subtle amount of shimmer that is perfect for a special occasion or if you’re just feeling fancy + It can be used wet or dry too.
I used Deeply Dashing all over the lid [on top of Painterly paint pot] with Fashion Fix in the crease.
Obsessed with this lip combo right now: Boldly Bare lip liner, Myth lipstick, & Celestial Kiss cremesheen gloss.
The perfect, ultimate nude lip

For my cheeks: I used Peaches [right]
I’ll try to post a LOTD to give you all ideas for a fresh new look or maybe some inspiration.

Let me know what you think! Have questions or suggestions? Please, comment! I would love to hear from you!

Falling for Fall-My Best Friend’s Wedding

Fall. By far, my favorite time of year. I may be a little biased because I was born in the greatest month of Fall [Heeeyyy, October babies]. I love it.

My best friend Ahsue [pronounced Ah-sue, thank you]  got married last month and her choice of colors for a fall themed wedding were breathtaking. Everything was so sweet and I couldn’t help but be in awe of all the little details-they really set the mood for the whole day. It was truly loveleigh.

+Plus, my children were a part of the festivities and that might have added a touch more of amazingness too [just sayin’!].

The day was filled with so much love, laughter and culture[<<—my fav part]

Flower girls and the Persian ceremony setting. Pics don’t do it justice–everything was so ornate and beautifully detailed.
How gorgeous is this bouquet? It was hand made and included a tiny pic of her Grandma.
The bright, perfect for fall, flowers.
Fashion Deets: my reception dress found here
I will be posting Ahsue’s bridal makeup look soon and introduce you to one of SD’s amazing bridal MUA, Chandra Campos.

Get ready!

Also, a lot of people asked me about what specific products to use and when to use them. We all know that Vit C is vital for your skin in the AM; and retinol, is essential in the PM. Of course, don’t forget about a quality face wash, and the Elta Md Sunscreen paired with a great moisturizer in between.

Sooo, I decided to compile a list of highly recommended products from Dermatologists, skin care experts, and consumers (like me).

{All can all be found at Torrey Pines Dermatology with 20% off!}

Here you go dolls:

*Torrey Pines Dermatology Eye Cream: Contains retinol & arnica which are fabulous for dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines {+has an amazing texture!!}

Favorite Retinol product(s):

*Torrey Pines Dermatology Retinol PLUS Antioxidant Serum 5X: assists in the achievement of smoother, firmer and more evenly toned skin.

*Tazorac: is a similar chemical form as vitamin A, but it is slightly stronger and is more effective for acne treatment. [I personally use this type because I suffer from breakouts periodically.] This product is both available in cream or gel and comes in two strengths, depending on the severity of your acne problem and your skin type. Industry Insider: Meet skincare expert, Janee

Happy Monday Loveleigh’s! To prepare you for the week, I wanted to introduce to you my own personal skincare expert/guru/specialist, Janee! Yes, she is fabulous and her skin is so amaze! Prepare to be real envious and read on dolls:

Janee, Loveleigh beauty, skincare expert, industry insider
{Yes, her skin looks like this in real life! No filter necessary.}

+Tell us a little about yourself/experience in all things skin related:

JM:  My name is Janeé Joyner Miranda and I’ve been an Esthetician for 12 years.  I have experience in all avenues of the industry; from spa, owning my own esthetic business, and now working in a Dermatologist office as a Medical Esthetician.

My extensive training and hands on experience has helped me to really understand skin and help my patients achieve their “best skin”.  I am truly fortunate to do something every day that I not only LOVE, but am so passionate about.

Through my relationship with my patients over the years, I have come to realize that skin is not just a physical thing, it is also emotional.  The best part of my job is watching someone transform their skin and seeing  the confidence and happiness being brought back to them when they are given the results they hope for.

People always ask: “What’s the first thing you notice about someone?” Over and over, you hear the same thing: teeth, eyes, smile, etc. But in actuality, the first “handshake” when you meet someone is their skin.

I am so excited to be a part of making someone feel good about that first impression!

+Skincare product we should never live without:

JM:  The product I will never go a day without is sunscreen.  Dermatologists recognize that the most potent product that can prevent, and reverse the signs of aging, is sunscreen.

Many people think of sunscreen as thick and greasy, with the potential of breaking their skin out.

My favorite sunscreen is Elta MD which can only be found in a doctor’s office.  Elta MD is pharmaceutical grade, noncomedogenic, contains microfine transparent zinc oxide, sensitivity-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free.

{My fav sunscreen too! I use the tinted one under a light mineralized powder for everyday wear. Be sure to use a stronger one, like the SPF 50, if you will be in the sun for longer periods of time.}

UV rays are part of the invisible energy that comes from the sun.  UVA (or what I call aging rays) account for 95% of our sun exposure.  They cause skin to age and contribute to skin cancer.  They penetrate deeply into the skin layers, damaging collagen and cells; which lead to wrinkling, hyper-pigmentation, and loss of elasticity.  UVB, or burning rays, mostly affect the outer layer of the skin and cause sunburns and tanning that increase the risk of skin cancer and other disorders.

A big misconception women have about sunscreen is that the amount of sunscreen in their makeup is enough protection.  Makeup wears off throughout the day and Dermatologists recommend that sunscreen be applied as a separate layer from other products to achieve maximum protection.

Sunscreen is the best anti-aging product you can buy and is worth every penny.

+Product(s)you swear by?

JM:  There are 2 ingredients in skincare that I swear by: Vitamin C in the a.m. and Retinol in the p.m.

Vitamin C: an antioxidant that slows down the damage free radicals have on our skin.  Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles.  Vitamin C can neutralize free radicals which not only will reverse damage but also prevent future skin damage.  It is the antioxidant that helps maintain healthy skin texture and elasticity.

Retinol: enhances the cellular turnover rate of the skin which gives skin a healthy and radiant glow.  Retinol, a form of Vitamin A, has many benefits such as removing superficial skin pigmentation, fights acne and blemishes, and anti-aging properties.  It aids in the formation of collagen to plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Many over-the-counter products include Retinol and Vitamin C because there is such a high demand for these ingredients with all the education out on the positive benefits these two can have on your skin.  The consumer must beware that not all dosages of these ingredients can be high enough for above mentioned results.  It is recommended to purchase products from your dermatologist’s office to ensure high quality and concentration of Vitamin C and Retinol.

+A few skincare essentials every girl needs:

JM:  Loveleigh’s, remember this:

The key to beautiful skin is achieving balanced skin.

Every girl’s skincare collection MUST include the following:

+  Cleanser: Use it twice when wearing makeup.  The first cleanse will break down the makeup, and the second will clean naked skin.

+ Active toner:   I recommend a toner in liquid or saturated pad form with Salicylic and Glycolic acid.  If you have sensitive skin a 2% glycolic/2% salicylic combination is enough, but if your skin is more tolerant then a 5% glycolic/2% salicylic is perfect.  This will keep the pores clean and help reduce congestion and blackheads.

+  Antioxidants: to protect, nourish and repair, such as: Vitamin C and Retinol.

+  Moisturizer: is key to beautiful skin.

When describing the balance of skin there are 3 types: normal, oil dry, and water dry.  “Oil dry” skin is more dry and taut. A moisturizer that nourishes, maintains moisture balance, brightens, and restores a youthful glow, is vital to achieve optimal results.

Another misconception for oily skin or “water dry” skin, is that a moisturizer is not    needed and will increase breakout.  When a person is oily they use ingredients to slow down oil production in the skin but they forget to add hydration or water which will prevent dullness.  You must find a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer, to restore hydration and radiance back to the skin

For the lucky few that can describe their skin as normal, should use a moisturizer according to weather and comfort.  If it is hot and humid then a sheer, oil-free moisturizer is perfect.  If it is cold and dry, then one that is more emollient will do the trick.

+5 ways to improve your skin today(!):

  1. Minimal Sun Exposure. This will lessen sun damage such as hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and dehydration.
  2. Drink lots of water and keep alcohol and caffeine consumption to a minimum.  Alcohol and caffeine will dehydrate the skin; which will make the skin look dry and increase fine lines.
  3. Invest in good quality skin care products that include Vitamin C, Retinol, and Alpha Hydroxy Acids.  This will keep your skin looking fresh and flawless, as well as, prevent signs of aging.
  4. Properly wash your face to ensure the removal of all makeup and impurities.  When you wear makeup, either start off with a makeup wipe and then cleanser, or double cleanse to break down the makeup.  Not thoroughly cleaning the skin will lead to dehydration and clogged pores.
  5. Get regular treatments from your Esthetician.  This will deep clean and exfoliate the skin.  Great skin is a combination of good skincare and professional treatments.
{Me, Janee & Chandra [<<<—stay tuned to meet one of the best MUA in the biz!]}

I recently had a Silk Peel treatment from Janee and my skin has never felt better! It’s a simple 20 minute procedure that delivers immediate results.

A silk peel is a non-invasive, dermatological procedure which exfoliates and stimulates skin cell growth. It is similar to a microdermabrasion but better for your skin and more precise.

A silk peel is used for hydrating skin, treating acne, and lightening skin.

Like Janee mentioned, skin must be maintained with hydration, moisturizers and sunscreens, to achieve the benefits of a silk peel.
If you’re in the San Diego area and want a consult with Janee, she can be found at Torrey Pines Dermatology, in La Jolla, 858-362-8800. She offers services in all things skin.

Call her now and thank me later.
